100K CLIMA

The 100,000 Strong in the AmericasAlliance for Climate Action (100K CLIMA) is a signature effort by the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs at the U.S. Department of State (WHA-DOS) and Partners of the Americas (Partners) to catalyze climate action and collaboration at higher education institutions in the U.S. and Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), equipping the region’s future workforce with the skills needed to lead in a climate-positive, 21st century green economy. This green economy must be built on region-wide alliances between industry, governments, civil society, and education institutions working in alignment to prepare the workforce needed to simultaneously reduce emissions, inequality, and poverty.  WHA-DOS and Partners are pleased to recognize the first supporters of the 100K CLIMA initiative:

Building on the 10-year track record and impactful model of the 100,000 Strong in the Americas Innovation Fund, the 100K CLIMA initiative is investing in climate action and collaboration among the region’s higher education institutions (HEIs).

Join the 100K CLIMA Alliance to:

  • Expand access to innovative, climate-focused workforce readiness programs for underrepresented students, in fields such as climate resilience, energy security, and renewable energy.
  • Stimulate cross-border partnerships and collaboration to deliver climate solutions.
  • Provide seed-funding for ground-breaking climate research and innovation.

How does 100K CLIMA work?

  • Grant Competitions Drive Innovation: 100K CLIMA grant competitions award seed funding to HEIs to invest in innovative climate action and green economy programs. The power of competition creates a “race-to-the-top” for HEI climate action and innovation, incentivizing collaboration and reciprocal investment.
  • Flexible Design: Partner with WHA-DOS and Partners to customize 100K CLIMA grant competitions to target countries, academic fields of study, and climate action strategies that align with your interests and climate goals.
  • Results in the Real World: 100K CLIMA grant-winning programs provide real solutions to climate challenges by preparing students for the regional green workforce, financing the development of new technologies, and expanding knowledge-sharing and collaboration among HEIs in the U.S. and LAC.
  • Inclusive Education: 100K CLIMA opportunities are designed with intentionality to maximize the participation of a wide and diverse range of HEIs and to open access to climate action and green economy programs for the region’s most underrepresented students.

With critical support from public and private donor-partners, WHA-DOS and Partners will design and launch up to five 100K CLIMA Innovation Fund grant competitions in 2022-24, resulting in upwards of 40 new 100K CLIMA partnerships and programs between diverse HEIs in the U.S. and LAC.
