Research on the Impact of Anthropic Activity on a Texas Urban Ecosystem and on an Andean Protected Forest and Paramo Ecosystem

Texas A&M University–Texarkana’s Biology and Environmental Studies Program and Universidad Pedagógica y Tecnológica de Colombia’s School of Environmental Engineering will offer a service-learning and research-based program that increases student knowledge in the assessment and restoration of local ecosystems. Students will propose and identify restoration strategies for the habitat of two tributaries of the City of Texarkana’s Days Creek Aquatic System that have been impacted by urbanization and the release of hazardous substances and for the El Malmo, a protected Andean Forest and paramo ecosystem affected by agriculture, livestock farming, and human movement through the region. Students will be working on existing ecosystem projects with the local Colombian government, witnessing first-hand and participating in the real-world application of their studies.
